An ancient river: Importance of Bogotá river for the environment.

Danger; an upstream battle to have a cleaner river.

This following blog talks about this important river, its conditions and the contamination that is affecting it.

Bogotá river is the most important one in the department of Cundinamarca in Colombia. It crosses the department from the north to the south. A part of the river is really near of the city. There are some people who live on the basin of the river. In addition to that, this river is considered as one of the most important bodies of water in the region, just below Magdalena River.

The actual state of the river can be determined as the coming conceptual points:

  • Contamination is produced by human life nearby.
  • Sewage and trash spread for over 380 km out of Bogota.
  • Bogota River contributes to polluting most of the area, specially when it flows into Magdalena River.
  • This river has been polluted for decades and some projects are being created in order to clean the current of the same one.
  • The citizens of the capital and the inhabitants of the region perform detrimental activities against the environment and ecology.
It is not a mystery that this river serves as a huge sewer for thousands of people in the surroundings. Millions of gallons of chemicals coming from several factories, household detergents and human waste pollute the current of the river from the high Andes right to Magdalena River. Plus,in the 2008, formal cleaner sent by the Ministry of Environment needed to use special mask and special clothes since the river was toxic.

Almost no animal can survive for a long time living in this river as it approaches to the national capital "Bogotá D.C.". That is why it is also known as "Dead River".

It is almost impossible to repair this river due to the high level of contamination that is affecting the river. Some experts have even said it is almost unbelievable. However, in recent years, public and private groups have planted more than 100,000 new trees, in ordr to help clean the air and water near the river, for example, according to the Ministry of Environment.

So, why is so important to take care of it?

Water scarcity affects more than 40 percent of people, an alarming figure that is projected to rise as temperatures do. Although 2.1 billion people have improved water sanitation since 1990, decreasing drinking water supplies is affecting every continent.

In conclusion, this river is so important for all of us since it is an essential body of water that benefits all the population of the region. We are the responsible ones to look after it because of those species that still live in it, so this river could become what it used to be in the past.

A really useful alternative is to follow the sustainable development goals which have been stated by the UNO (The United Nations Organizations). These set of recommendations proposes to take care of the environment by following a pile of tips as regards Ecology and Technology.
